Assist Life Stage Transition: What That Line in Your Plan Actually Pays For

You open your plan. Somewhere in it is a line called Assist Life Stage, Transition. No explanation. No dollar figure you recognise. Nothing telling you what to do with it.

It is one of the worst-named things in the scheme. It is also one of the most useful, because it pays for the person who helps you work out everything else.

What is Assist Life Stage Transition?

The full name on the NDIS register is "Assistance In Coordinating Or Managing Life Stages, Transitions And Supports". Providers call it by its code, 0106.

In plain English: it funds help to plan and organise your supports when something in your life is changing.

Not the support work itself. The organising.

What does it actually fund?

Four things sit under 0106. Most people only ever use the first two.

• Support Connection. Someone helps you understand your plan and get connected to providers. Lighter touch, usually shorter term.
• Coordination of Supports. A support coordinator works with you across your whole plan: finding providers, sorting problems, getting your services working together.
• Psychosocial Recovery Coaching. For people with a psychosocial disability. A coach who knows mental health works alongside you.
• Individualised Living Options, exploration and design. Help to design a home-and-living arrangement that is not a group home.

What does it cost?

These are the maximum hourly rates a provider can charge from 1 July 2026, at the standard national rate:

• Support Connection: $80.06 an hour
• Coordination of Supports: $100.14 an hour

Higher limits apply in remote and very remote areas. Your plan holds a set number of dollars, not a set number of hours, so the rate decides how many hours you get.

When should you ask for it?

0106 is a transition category. It is easiest to argue for when something is genuinely changing:

• Finishing school and working out what comes next
• Moving out of the family home for the first time
• Coming out of hospital and needing supports set up before you get there
• A relationship ending, a carer becoming unwell, a living arrangement breaking down
• Your first plan, when you do not know any providers yet

If your situation is stable and your supports are running fine, the NDIA is less likely to fund it. That is worth knowing before your planning meeting.

What it does not cover

This is where people get caught out. Assist Life Stage Transition does not pay for:

• Your actual support workers. That comes out of your Core budget.
• Therapy. That is a different budget again.
• Rent, bond, or moving costs. The NDIS does not fund everyday living costs.
• Someone to make decisions for you. A coordinator helps you decide. They do not decide.

How to ask for it

Go into your planning meeting with the change, not the category. Say what is happening and what will go wrong without help.

"My son finishes school in December and we have no idea what happens in February" lands better than asking for 0106 by name. Bring anything in writing: a letter from the school, a discharge summary, a report from your OT.

Ask for a specific number of hours and say what they are for. Vague requests get vague funding.
