Understanding the NDIS

A plain-language guide to how the NDIS works, who can access it, and what it covers.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is an Australian Government program that funds support for people with permanent and significant disabilities. It launched in 2013 and is now available nationwide. The big difference from previous systems? You get an individual plan, you choose your own providers, and you decide how your supports are delivered.

Your NDIS plan sets out funding for the supports you need. That could be anything from personal care and community access to therapy, assistive technology, and home modifications. The funding is based on your goals and what you need to achieve them.

As a registered NDIS provider, InLife works with participants across Australia to deliver practical support that helps you live the way you want to. If you are new to the NDIS or thinking about switching providers, we are happy to walk you through it.

How to Access the NDIS

Six steps from eligibility check to receiving your first supports.

1

Check Eligibility

You need to be under 65, an Australian resident, and have a permanent disability that affects your daily life.

2

Make an Access Request

Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110, or ask your doctor, hospital, or a provider like InLife to help you submit an access request.

3

Planning Meeting

You will meet with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator to talk about your goals, your daily routine, and what support would help most.

4

Receive Your Plan

Your plan sets out your funding across different support categories. It is based on your individual goals and what you need to achieve them.

5

Choose Your Providers

You pick who delivers your supports. That is where InLife comes in. We are happy to chat about how we can help before you commit to anything.

6

Start Receiving Support

Once your providers are sorted, support begins. Your plan gets reviewed regularly to make sure it still fits your life.

Quick Eligibility Check

Answer three simple questions to get an indication of whether you may be eligible for the NDIS. This is a guide only and does not guarantee eligibility.
