How Community Participation Changes Lives
The Power of Community Participation
Being part of a community is one of the most fundamental human needs. For people with disability, community participation is not just a line item in an NDIS plan; it is a pathway to friendships, skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. At InLife, we have seen firsthand through our community and social participation services how meaningful community engagement can transform the lives of our participants.
What Is Community Participation?
Under the NDIS, community participation (sometimes called social and community participation) refers to supports that help you take part in community, social, and recreational activities. This can include:
- Joining a local sports team or fitness class
- Attending art workshops, music groups, or cooking classes
- Volunteering with a community organisation
- Going to the movies, markets, or local events
- Visiting parks, libraries, museums, and cultural centres
- Participating in social groups with peers
The key is that these activities are chosen by you and align with your interests and goals. Community participation is not about filling time; it is about building a life that is rich, varied, and personally meaningful.
Why Community Participation Matters
Research consistently shows that social connection and community involvement have a profound impact on wellbeing. For NDIS participants, the benefits of community participation include:
- Reduced isolation and loneliness: Regular social interaction helps combat the feelings of isolation that many people with disability experience. Learning to build independence at home can also complement your community participation goals.
- Improved mental health: Being active in the community is linked to lower rates of anxiety and depression.
- Skill development: Community activities provide natural opportunities to practise communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Greater confidence: Trying new things and succeeding builds self-esteem and a sense of capability.
- Expanded social networks: Meeting new people in community settings can lead to lasting friendships and a stronger support network.
How the NDIS Funds Community Participation
Community participation is typically funded under the Core Supports budget in your NDIS plan, specifically under the category called Assistance with Social and Community Participation. This funding can be used to pay for a support worker to accompany you to activities, cover activity fees, and provide transport to and from community events.
If you are unsure whether your plan includes funding for community participation, check your plan document or speak with your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). Our team at InLife can also help you understand your funding and explore the options available to you.
Finding the Right Activities
Choosing community activities that genuinely interest you is essential. Here are some ideas to get started:
- Think about hobbies or interests you have always wanted to explore
- Ask friends, family, or support workers for suggestions
- Check your local council website for community programmes and events
- Look for inclusive groups that welcome people of all abilities
- Try a few different activities to see what feels right
Community participation is about more than activities. It is about feeling like you belong, that your presence matters, and that you have something valuable to contribute.
